Serbian parliament speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic stated Thursday that, as long as there is a parliamentary majority, they will be the ones to decide on when elections will be held.

Serbian parliament speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic stated Thursday that, as long as there is a parliamentary majority, they will be the ones to decide on when elections will be held.

"We are on the threshold of elections, and the citizens are indifferent about whether they will be held at the end of 2011 or the beginning of 2012," Djukic Dejanovic told the Belgrade-based daily Danas, assessing that the parliamentary majority has been "slim, but stable."

She expressed regret that Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic addressed the Serbian public by staging a hunger and thirst strike, thus sending a message without effect, and assessed that, with this act, Nikolic only managed to tarnish the reputation of politicians in Serbia.

"Fortunately, apart from that, nothing else has changed on the political scene, and it is good that there are no consequences for obtaining the EU candidate status. In addition, we are just as close, that is far, to holding new parliamentary elections," Djukic Dejanovic stressed.

Commenting the statement of Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) President Ivica Dacic who said that he would call elections immediately if he was in the place of Serbian President Boris Tadic, Djukic Dejanovic pointed out that she understands Dacic's position, because, as a politician, he strongly advocates the stability of political life and security of the Serbian citizens.

When asked about the coalition with SNS, she said that the citizens will make that decision with their votes. "We would like to continue doing the work we started in this mandate, and we consider the Democratic Party (DS) an adequate partner in those activities," she added.
