Serbian citizens celebrated the very beginning of the New Year according to the Julian calendar, with music and dance in streets, clubs and cafes in many cities, as well as in winter resorts.

New Year's Day by the Julian calendar is also known by a popular name of the Orthodox or Serbian New Year. Serbian, Russian, and Georgian Orthodox Church, as well as the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and the Holy Mount, who adhere to the Julian calendar, have marked today the beginning of 2011 and the two major Christian holidays - the Circumcision of Jesus Christ and St. Basil the Great.
Thousands of people greeted the Julian calendar New Year in front of the Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade with bells ringing and fireworks at midnight.
Hvostan Bishop Atanasije served a prayer for a successful and blessed New Year and the people in front of the temple were offered mulled wine and brandy.
