EULEX is capable of carrying out an investigation into the organ trafficking allegations from the report of Council of Europe rapporteur Dick Marty, and of efficiently protecting the witnesses, EULEX spokesperson Irina Gudeljevic has stated.

We fully trust EULEX's unit in charge of witness protection, which has so far proved to be capable of handling very delicate and high profile cases, Gudeljevic told the Radio Free Europe. The unit can be expanded, depending on the volume and complexity of the case, she added.

When asked if an independent prosecutor should be appointed, as recommended by the Human Rights Watch, she said that EULEX has a number of experienced and independent special prosecutors.

All EULEX special prosecutors are independent. They are fully capable of conducting highly complex investigations, Gudeljevic stressed.

The aim of the preliminary investigation is to determine whether there is enough evidence to launch an official investigation against anybody, she pointed out. EULEX also has jurisdiction over the crimes committed in Albania. We have already handled crimes committed outside the territory of Kosovo, such as the indictment regarding possible abuse of persons held captive in the Kosovo Liberation Army premises in northern Albania during the conflicts in 1998-1999, she underscored.
