Kosovo President Bedzet Pacoli resigned Wednesday after the Constitutional Court ruled that the decision of the parliament, which named him president a month ago, was unconstitutional, but he announced he will run for the office again.

Kosovo President Bedzet Pacoli is willing to respect the decision of the Constitutional Court, Pacoli's assistant Ibrahim Gasi told reporters.

He added, however, that Pacoli will run in the next presidential election, because he did not break the Constitution.

"The president of the Republic of Kosovo Behgjet Pacolli is ready to respect the decision (of the constitutional court)," Pacolli's top aide Ibrahim Gashi told reporters.

"Pacolli will be the candidate of the coalition partners in the new election of a new president because he did not violate the constitution," Gashi added.

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci stated that the government will honor the decision of the Constitutional Court, which found that the procedure for Pacolli's appointment as president was unconstitutional, and announced that the vote for the president of Kosovo will be held sometime next week.

"We will fulfill the agenda that is before us, I believe very quickly, next week, as the Kosovo assembly, as a political party and as a coalition partner. The coalition continues with its full state agenda," he said.

Prime Minister Thaci called on the opposition to play a constructive role and participate in the further procedure in the Assembly regarding the vote for the president of Kosovo. He expressed optimism and confidence that the assembly will appoint a president.

U.S. Assistant Ambassador in Pristina Mike Murphy reiterated that the U.S. believed that any decision adopted by the Constitutional Court must be respected, adding that this also applied to the ruling that struck down the election of the Kosovo president.

During a visit to Leposavic, he added that he could not comment on legal questions in any other way or a decision that he himself had not seen.

The Constitutional Court overruled Kosovo President Bexhet Pacolli's election by the Kosovo Assembly on March 22, deeming it unconstitutional and contrary to Article 86 of the Kosovo Constitution.

Commenting on talks between Belgrade and Pristina, the assistant ambassador also said that he believed results could be achieved if both sides maintained a constructive attitude.
