Law forces 38 percent of smokers to quit smoking

The Law on the Protection of Population Against Tobacco Smoke in Serbia has forced 38 percent of smokers to quit smoking, 20 percent of them are considering leaving cigarettes, and 25 percent reduced the cigarette consumption, the results of the survey carried out by the Serbian Health Ministry showed.

An increasing number of citizens support the Law on Protection of Population Against Tobacco Smoke, and their percentage has reached about 80 percent of the adult population, compared to 77 percent in November 2010, the statement reads.
The survey was carried out from February 23 until March 2, 2011, three months after the adoption of the Law.
Compared to the first survey, carried out six months ago, the latest one shows that the population's exposure to tobacco smoke in the workplace has reduced considerably from 45 to 35 percent, in schools from 44 to 23 percent, and a number of people who allow smoking in their homes has also dropped.
