Serbian President Boris Tadic said late Wednesday that it would be irrational to call early parliamentary elections before Serbia become a candidate for EU membership and used other opportunities available to the current government.

Serbian President Boris Tadic said late Wednesday that it would be irrational to call early parliamentary elections before Serbia become a candidate for EU membership and used other opportunities available to the current government.

“I do not want to be irresponsible and reduce Serbia's chances, I am going to act like a responsible man and increases the chances for Serbia in line with the Constitution,” Tadic said in an interview with journalists in Kragujevac (central Serbia).

According to him, nobody can guarantee that Serbia would be given EU membership candidate status this year's fall, but the scheduling of elections would mean giving up on the chance because some of the EU states that are not keen on expanding the EU would wait to see the results of the elections.

“Electoral actions should take place in their due time, as a country which continuously calls new elections and that lives in the continuity of elections held every year or two are not stable countries and send wrong signals to investors,” said Tadic, adding that Serbia should enter a regular election cycle as that is one of the prerequisites of development.

He said that creating an atmosphere of emergency was not in the interest of any citizen or company in Serbia or the region.
