Road maintenance workers employed in companies that are part of Nibens Group blocked several road junctions in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Nis early on Wednesday, requesting that competent bodies resolve the issue of the companies' survival and employees.
Sonja Vukanovic of the Autonomous Trade Union of Road Maintenance Workers of Serbia told Tanjug that employees of companies within the Nibens Group held trade union meetings, after which they spontaneously decided to organise road-blocks, but she did not wish to specify how long the protests would go on.
She said that this matter depends on the competent bodies who are supposed to include the companies' employees in the decision-making regarding the next steps relevant to the future of the group.
The Autonomous Trade Union of Road Maintenance Workers of Serbia announced last week that it would stage radical protests as of Wednesday unless bank accounts of companies that are part of Nibens Group are unblocked and the companies are enabled to continue with their work on Corridors 10 and 11.
Vukanovic previously stated that the companies owe about EUR 110 million to banks and about the same amount to suppliers.
She underscored that the fate of 5.000 employees of the Nibens Group, whose owner Milo Djuraskovic was arrested in May, are still uncertain.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy released last week that the Serbian government has reached an agreement to launch reorganisation of Nibens Group, whose companies would continue working on already started tasks so that they could pay back their debt to employees, the banking system, economy and the government.
The owner of Nibens Group and seven managers in road mainenance companies within the Nibens Group were arrested in May on suspicion that they caused EUR 32 million worth of damages to FAM. The funds currently blocked on the company's bank account total EUR 1.28 billion.
