UNMIK Spokesperson Olivier Salgado said on Monday that the referendum in northern Kosovo will be held contrary to the existing law, and hence it will have no legal repercussions.

In a statement for Tanjug, Salgado stressed that taking into account that the holding of the referendum is contrary to the current law, UNMIK will play no role in it, i.e. UNMIK will not monitor how it will be carried out.

The UNMIK spokesperson noted that for them, the referendum, which will be held in northern Kosovo in the next two days, will have no legal repercussions.

Kosovo Police Service (KPS) regional spokesperson Besim Hoti told Tanjug on Monday that the police have no specific operational plan for the next two days in northern Kosovo, and that it will work on maintaining the public order as in previous days.

There is a possibility of strengthened police presence in the areas in which Serbs live alongside Albanians so as to prevent possible incidents, Hoti added.

Despite firm opposition from the Belgrade authorities and international community, citizens residing in four northern Kosovo municipalities will on February 14-15 voice their opinion as to whether they accept the institutions of the so-called Republic of Kosovo.

Top state officials oppose the holding of this referendum, pointing to the fact that the question in the ballot paper is redundant, because it alludes to the solution that already exists in the Constitution.

Preliminary results will be known in the evening hours of February 15, and the final ones will be published on February 19.
The northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica is covered in posters calling on citizens to vote against Kosovo's institutions in the coming referendum.
