German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas stated on Monday that, in order to obtain an EU candidate status in March, Serbia has to meet the conditions clearly defined by the European Council in March, and added that he is neither pessimistic nor optimistic in this respect.

German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas stated on Monday that, in order to obtain an EU candidate status in March, Serbia has to meet the conditions clearly defined by the European Council in March, and added that he is neither pessimistic nor optimistic in this respect.

I am not pessimistic when it comes to Serbia's chances to become a candidate for EU membership on March 1. I am far from being optimistic, but at least I am not a pessimist at the moment. This (meeting the conditions) is not so hard. If they are fulfilled, then I will not be pessimistic about Serbia's candidacy, Maas said during a meeting with Belgrade students at the German Embassy.

He noted that the conditions imply implementing agreements reached in the dialogue with Pristina, including the integrated border management, allowing EULEX and KFOR to act on the whole territory of Kosovo and reaching an agreement on Pristina's regional presentation.

The German ambassador pointed out that it has been two months since December's meeting of the European Council and that the conditions still have not been met.
