The EU wants to continue its enlargement to the countries of the Balkans, including Serbia, which is part of the European culture, and whose people showed clearly in the elections that is what they wanted too, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said on Tuesday.

The EU wants to continue its enlargement to the countries of the Balkans, including Serbia, which is part of the European culture, and whose people showed clearly in the elections that is what they wanted too, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said on Tuesday.

The EU wishes to send a message to all the countries in the Balkans, including Serbia, that it wants to continue in the same direction, Degert stated in between informal meetings discussing Europe Day, which is on May 9.

Serbia has made very important strides towards the EU in the past two to three years, he stressed, citing the visa liberalization, trade agreement and candidate status as examples.

Degert said the EU wished to go on and that he thought the people of Serbia wanted the same thing too, as shown in the latest elections. Around 92 percent of the parties that advocate EU integration are in the parliament now, while those who oppose it have been mostly marginalized and failed to win parliament seats, he remarked.

Degert stated that Serbia is part of the European culture and has always been that, adding that the European Week event started on Tuesday and would last 12 days, comprising a series of smaller events throughout Serbia.
