According to the latest information, 32 people were killed and one survived when a UN plane crashed in Congo, UN officials said.
The plane carrying UN mission members crashed as it tried to land at the airport in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa.
We can confirm that one out of 33 passengers survived, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said Monday night.
The UN earlier said that both Congolese and foreign nationals were on board the plane, while 20 of them worked for the UN, Reuters reported.
The plane, flying from Kisangani to Kinshasa, was owned by a Georgian flag carrier that said the crew was Georgian.
Pilots lost control over the plane as they tried to land it due to strong winds. Both pilots were killed.
A UN source said that the plane landed heavily, broke into two and caught fire, while Reuters’ correspondent reported that the plane was completely destroyed and that the wreckage was lying at the end of the runway.
The UN's 19,000-strong peacekeeping mission is helping the Congo government to fight rebel groups in the east of the country, and supervising peace process following the 1998-2003 civil war that killed five million people.
