This day of Christian mourning is the last and most important day of the Easter Week for the entire Christian world, while the death of Christ is an introduction to the joy of Resurrection that all Christian churches celebrate this year on Sunday, April 24.
Orthodox churches do not serve liturgies on Good Friday, but the royal hours with readings of parts of the gospel pertaining to the events of Christ’s death.
In Orthodox churches on Good Friday, bells are not rung – masses are announced by wooden boards.
Good Friday is a day of strict fasting for all Christians, and it is customary to color eggs in red, which is a symbol of the innocently shed blood of Christ and of new life that is born from his conscious self-sacrifice.
