The trial to nine of a total of 13 suspected members of the "Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire" urban terrorist group, responsible for the series of bombing attacks at the end of last year, opened Monday morning in an Athens tribunal court, Greek news agency ANA reports.
The proceedings for suspects arrested for participation in the “urban terror group” started under strict security measures and a strong police contingent on hand at the high-security prison Korydallos near Piraeus, in western Athens.
Six of the defendants remained in custody pending trial, the other three were out with restrictive conditions pending trial, including prohibition of leaving the country, while four anarchists will be tried in absence.
Defendants are between 19 and 30 of age, and are facing numerous felony charges – terrorist organisation membership, responsibility for three bomb attacks, specifically ones targeting the offices of current labour minister Louka Katseli, former interior minister Panagiotis Hinofotis and the offices of Macedonia-Thrace ministry, ANA reports.
Even though no one was injured in the attacks, there was significant material damage, and the defendants could be facing sentence of up to maximal 25 years in prison, agency AP reported.
That “urban terrorist group” accepted responsibility for series of bombing attacks, whose targets were judges, media, government officials and political institutions.
"Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire" group appeared in public in 2008 and attracted attention with their anarchist stands.
