Leader of the main opposition party of socialists in Albania, Edi Rama said a dialogue could not be launched with the current government, which "has won the elections due to stolen votes."

Leader of the main opposition party of socialists in Albania, Edi Rama said a dialogue could not be launched with the current government, which "has won the elections due to stolen votes."

"We cannot have a dialogue with the government, which is stealing votes from the opposition and we call on the international partners to tell the truth about the local elections held on May 8 in Tirana," Rama stated.

The local elections have deteriorated the political crisis in Albania intensifying the rift between the countries' leading parties - the ruling Democratic Party of PM Sali Berisha and the Socialist Party led by Edi Rama.

A row erupted surrounding the election of a Tirana mayor. Votes have been counted several times and ultimately the candidate of the ruling coalition, Ljuljzim Basa, to be proclaimed victor.

Those of us who love Albania are aware of the corruption that is rampant there. We are also aware of the stupidity of Prime Minister, Sali Berisha. His involvement in the pyramid scam of 1996-97, though limited, is well known. This is the man who refused to accept a single election result whilst in opposition, even complaining that the election role was corrupt on one occasion, though his figures suggested that there should have been more voters on it than are resident in the country.

It is true I have always considered that Edi Rama would make a far better leader for Albania, and I can understand the current situation. But maybe now is the time to come to a settlement to the problem and work from within the system.

The one plus to all this is that so long as it continues the EU will not accept further moves to Albania becoming an EU country. After all, Brussels do not want any competition to their undemocratic actions.
