The state company has lost some 90 million kunas (12 million Euros) on these lines that include connections between Zagreb, Rijeka and Osijek, amongst others. The losses have prevented the company from buying some badly needed new trains.

The non-profitable lines such as those above generate around 7 million kunas (933,000 Euros) of losses each month.

The President of the Management Board Renato Humic said that the company's subsidies have been cut 310 million kunas (41.3 million Euros) this year.

"Two models are possible. The first option is that 90 million kuna debt is covered with subsidies, and the other one is to cut 164 connections." Some estimate that could lead to job cuts as well some 2,000 workers, daily Vecernji List writes.
