Chairman of the National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) Gabriel Oprea said at the Palace of Parliament that the protocol signed by his political formation and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is aimed at Romania's stability.

Chairman of the National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) Gabriel Oprea said at the Palace of Parliament that the protocol signed by his political formation and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is aimed at Romania's stability.

He stressed that the reason why UNPR was set up two years ago is exactly that of ensuring the country's stability during the global economic crisis.

"Without this party, Romania would have ended up into economic slippage. This party advocated Romania's stability, it came into being in a difficult moment. I never asked for anything, I was Minister of National Defence before UNPR was established," Gabriel Oprea said.

He underscored that PM-designate and PSD chairman Victor Ponta opposed his quitting the party that was at that time headed by Mircea Geoana. The progressive chairman added that together with his colleagues he built UNPR "from scratch", a party that has not watered down its center-left political hue and which has been an advocate for Romania's stability.

"The Ungureanu government was defeated democratically in Parliament and even at the moment [PDL leader] Emil Boc said that that coalition no longer exists, UNPR stayed true to the principle of stability. We now sign this protocol for Romania's stability," Oprea underscored.
