The Serbian Customs Administration brought in RSD 285 billion worth of budget revenue (EUR 1 = RSD 106) in 2010 by collecting duties and value-added tax on imported goods, which is 14.5 percent more than the sum raised last year, Director of the Customs Administration Predrag Petronijevic stated on Tuesday.

At the annual administration conference, he said that in 2010, Serbian customs officers confiscated around 145 kilograms of heroin, 40 kilograms of marijuana, 13 kilograms of skunk and approximately 5 kilograms of cocaine, as well as 23.8 million of cigarettes.

The customs service temporarily seized 818.867 pieces of various goods, on suspicion that the said items are subject to violation of intelectual property rights, Petronijevic said.

During 2010, the customs office also prevented several attempts of illegal border crossing, smuggling of medicines, medical equipment and devices, food and protected animal species, Petronijevic said, adding that the customs service regularly interrupts smugglers of weapons, money and radioactive substances.

He pointed out that the Customs Administration is successfully implementing the reforms which facilitate the country's European and global integration, as shown by the positive assessments published by the European Commission (EC) and the World Customs Organisation.

“The annual report on Serbia's progress on its EU path, which the EC issued in November, listed the Serbian Customs Office for the third time as one of the country's best-ranked insitutions when it comes to reforms and adjustments to the EU standards,” Petronijevic said.
