The Commission for the Protection of Competition has begun an analysis of the Serbian market in several significant areas to verify claims of monopoly made by the European Parliament.

Based on the analysis' results and procedures that may be mounted, it will be possible to state whether the claims in the European Parliament's resolution on the existence of monopolies in various sectors are fully accurate, read a Feb. 7 written statement by the commission to the Euractiv Serbia Web portal .
The release did not specify which areas were in question.
In a resolution on Serbia passed in January 2011, the European Parliament maintains that monopolies in Serbia hinder the operation of the country's market.
The commission said competition in Serbia was regulated in accordance with European standards, but that participants in the market lacked awareness of the importance of abiding by anti-monopoly policy rules.
