Serbian President Boris Tadic said Thursday that the warning from the EU that Serbia's visa liberalization might be suspended should be taken seriously, but that he is convinced this will not happen and an adequate solution will be found.

Serbian President Boris Tadic said Thursday that the warning from the EU that Serbia's visa liberalization might be suspended should be taken seriously, but that he is convinced this will not happen and an adequate solution will be found.

"Serbia will do everything on its part to make sure this does not happen. I am sure this will not happen, and that the Interior Ministry and the government will do everything necessary, because otherwise the consequences would be major. I believe a solution will be found," Tadic said, commenting on statements from EU officials who said Serbia's visa-free regime could be temporarily suspended.

Tadic said that the issue was opened by a letter from Belgian State Secretary Melchior Wathelet, sent ahead of his visit to Serbia.

"In the meantime, he visited Serbia and expressed satisfaction with what we have done on border control and meeting Serbia's obligations," Tadic said.

The Serbian president stressed that the warning should nevertheless be taken seriously, and noted that European countries should show sensitivity for what visa liberalization means for Serbian citizens.
