The overall security situation in northern Kosovo between April 16- July 15, or the period covered by the report, has been relatively peaceful, except for an increase in tensions towards the end, says Ban Ki-moon's report, which he will deliver to the U.N. Security Council on Aug. 29.

In his regular report on Kosovo, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urges all sides to refrain from unilateral actions that could threaten the progress achieved in the Belgrade-Pristina dialog and escalate tensions.

The overall security situation in northern Kosovo between April 16- July 15, or the period covered by the report, has been relatively peaceful, except for an increase in tensions towards the end, says Ban Ki-moon's report, which he will deliver to the U.N. Security Council on Aug. 29.

"In northern Kosovo, growing tensions remain a cause for concern. In this regard, I will continue to firmly stress that sensitive issues related to northern Kosovo can only be resolved using peaceful means, by consulting with all communities on the ground, and not through any unilateral action," says the report, a copy of which was handed to BETA.

"I urge all sides to refrain from actions that might undermine the progress achieved in the dialog and escalate tensions, and to work together to prevent a further deterioration of the situation," Ki-moon goes on to say in the report which covers the period that precedes an operation staged by Kosovo ROSU special police operation at two crossings located on the the administrative line separating Kosovo from Serbia proper.

In the document, the U.N. secretary general voices his satisfaction with the concrete results achieved in the intensified dialog between Belgrade and Pristina, three months after its start.

Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has announced that Serbia will ask for Pristina's unilateral use of force in northern Kosovo to be condemned by the U.N. Security Council at the Aug. 29 session.
