The European Commission (EC) will recommend the beginning of the accession talks with Serbia once a sustainable progress in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is achieved, Peter Stano, a spokesman of the EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele, stated on Tuesday, adding that a solution should be sought in complete equality of all people in the entire territory of Kosovo.

According to him, the EC does not have to wait for a year to give recommendation for the beginning of accession talks with Serbia. Once the country achieves sufficient and sustainable progress in the talks, the EC can recommend to member states to begin the accession talks with Serbia, Stano stated for Cologne-based radio Deutsche Welle.

The progress comprises full recognition of inclusive regional cooperation and energy agreements, solution of telecommunication issue and mutual recognition of diplomas, continuation of application of all achieved agreements and active cooperation with EULEX in the entire territory of Kosovo, the German radio said.

When asked whether the recognition of Kosovo will at one moment turn into a necessary precondition for Serbia's EU accession, the official said there is no need to rush, but rather take one step at a time and focus on the issues which are on the agenda at the moment, such as continuation of the dialogue and progress in this domain.

The EU is not ready to accept another unresolved conflict and that should be an impetus for both parties to find the solution. This will be neither easy nor quickly, but we believe that gradually a mutually acceptable solution will be reached which would bring both countries closer to the EU, Stano concluded.
