European Union Ambassador to Serbia Vincent Degert said on Oct. 17 that Serbia should upgrade its justice system and police in the aim of more efficiently fighting human trafficking, so that traders in human beings who have killed their victims can never again be sentenced to only ten years in prison.

Degert called for modern laws to appropriately criminalize modern slavery, at an assembly held at Belgrade's Youth Club on Oct. 18, European AntiTrafficking Day.
At the EU Information Center in Belgrade, Degert opened a workshop on the fight against human trafficking.
He stressed the victims of human trafficking needed to speak publicly about their experiences to prevent others from entering the same vicious circle.
