International Civilian Representative Pieter Feith stated on Thursday that the planned roadblocks on two crossings announced by the Self-Determination Movement will not enhance Kosovo's international position or contribute to efforts that aim to set up normal relations with Serbia.
The plan of the Self-Determination Movement to block Merdare and Bela Zemlja crossings on the administrative line with (central) Serbia will not contribute to the efforts of the government, civilian society and the international community aimed at building normal and good neighbourly relations between Serbia and Kosovo, Feith noted in a written statement.
He added that this does not constitute responsible attitude of an organisation that has its representatives in the Kosovo parliament and that if Self-Determination carries out its plans, it would be detrimental to Kosovo's international reputation.
Feith stated that setting up roadblocks by Self-Determination would at the same time point to a lack of respect for one of Europe's key values, that is, free passage of passengers and goods.
By its constructive engagement in the dialogue mediated by the EU, Kosovo realised practical benefits for its citizens and Self-Determination's activities constitute a risk that undermines achieved results, Feith stated.
Opposition movement Self-Determination announced that it would block Merdare and Bela Zemlja crossings since the Kosovo government is not implementing the decisions adopted by the Kosovo parliament, in which it calls for reciprocity with Serbia in the political, economic and commercial relations.
Kosovo Police Minister Bajram Redzepi stated that the police would protect order and peace but he did not wish to reveal the details as to what kind of measures the police would resort to on January 14.
