Bad weather with heavy storms and rain has hit Greece. In Athens, heavy rainfall caused transport chaos and flooded basements and ground shops while intervention of fire department was necessary in many cases.

Tornado hit Kalamata and the island of Zante. The Civil protection General Secretariat and the state mechanism are on the alert to deal with any problems that may arise.
Heavy rainfall caused transport chaos in Athens and brought down branches even trees. The Fire Department received tens of calls from Pallini, Ilion and Pikermi suburbs to pump out water from flooded basements.
In Kalamata, tornado lift the roof of the Port Authority Office, uprooted trees and brought down a DEH pylon. Extensive damage was caused to shipyard installations. A meting is to be held at the Town Hall to assess damage and estimate cost for restoration of damage.
The island of Zante was also hit by tornado which caused damages to houses and cultivations.
In Kilkis, heavy rain has disrupted train services, and traffic in the Polikastro-Thessaloniki old national road.
In Rethymno, all members of a family were killed in a road accident when driver lost control of car due to heavy rain and slippery road.
Bad weather conditions are forecast to intensify today and tomorrow while improvement of weather is expected from Wednesday.
