The European police organization EUROPOL organizes in Sarajevo a three-day expert group meeting of the Western Balkans and Turkey (WeBTEG), which brought together prosecutors, police and forensic experts in the field of money counterfeiting from the Western Balkans and Turkey.
BiH Chief Prosecutor Milorad Barasin said the goal of this meeting was to improve capacities of countries in the region in the fight against various forms of crime on the path towards EU standards and integration.
He pointed out that counterfeiting money and other means of payment is, in circumstances of developed means of communication and money flow a very dangerous conduct.
“Such activities undermine the overall economic stability and security of payment transactions, not only in Bosnia but also in the entire region”, said Barasin.
In many cases the State Prosecution has cooperated with prosecutors of the countries in the region and significantly contributed to the successful completion of these cases and convictions of perpetrators of these crimes.
One of introductory speakers was the BiH Central Bank Governor Kemal Kozaric, who spoke on the role of the CBBH and protection of the domestic currency.
It was concluded that 90 percent of payment transactions in BiH are still done in cash and for those engaged in illegal acts this was a "good information" if they attempt to misuse the system.
In addition to representatives of Europol, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Network for Cooperation in Justice of the European Union (Eurojust) and the Office of the European Commission Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) in Italy, and a representative of the International Advisory Group of South East European Prosecutors (SEEPAG) from BiH.
