Alternate Foreign Minister Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou on Wednesday forwarded a document to Parliament detailing efforts to facilitate the easier entry into Greece of Chinese students wishing to attend courses in post-secondary education centres and liberal studies centres.

Xenogiannakopoulou underlined that the foreign ministry, by utilising provisions provided by the European acquis and national legislation, is making "all possible efforts" to facilitate procedures for students from the People's Republic of China wishing to enter Greece.

The statement was issued in response to a tabled question by main opposition New Democracy (ND) MP Costas Karagounis over what he called "obstacles" faced by Chinese students wishing to study in Greece.

Xenogiannakopoulou clarified that most of the Schengen Pact member-states follow the same standard procedures, adding that adequate language proficiency is the main inhibitory factor for Chinese students wishing to study in Schengen-area countries.
