Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki met Thursday in Washington with US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Gordon and with US Congressman David Price, co-chair of the Democratic Partnership Commission of the US House of Representatives.

Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki met Thursday in Washington with US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Gordon and with US Congressman David Price, co-chair of the Democratic Partnership Commission of the US House of Representatives.

Poposki presented Macedonia's expectations and arguments in obtaining a NATO membership invitation as soon as possible that are based on its performances in line with the Membership Action Plan and participation in NATO-led missions, MoFA says in a press release.

He underlined that Macedonia remained committed to partaking in the ISAF mission as long as necessary in compliance with NATO's strategy for Afghanistan.

Reaffirming the aspects stemming from the judgement of the International Court of Justice, the FM voiced his anticipations that the United States - being the strongest promoter of NATO's enlargement - would intercede in favour of extending the well-deserved membership invitation to Macedonia. Minister Poposki pledged that Macedonia would resume playing an important role for a successful outcome in the negotiations aimed at overcoming the differences surrounding the name with Greece and especially in advancing countries' neighbourly ties.

On Wednesday, Poposki at the US Congress in Washington held a meeting with Congressman Albio Sires, a member of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives. He informed Congressman Sires on current developments related to Macedonia's bid to join the Alliance, voicing expectations for a support by the US Congress regarding the matter.

The Macedonian FM also addressed the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the first time since Macedonia became a member of the regional organisation to serve as a permanent observer.

Speaking before ambassadors of 35 OAS members, Poposki focused on the aspects of improving Macedonia's cooperation with countries from the western hemisphere with an emphasis on bolstering economic collaboration. The FM elaborated the reforms implemented by the Government of Macedonia aimed to improve the business climate and opportunities for attracting direct foreign investments.

How is building giant Alexander statues, thieving Greek history, and encouraging citrizens to see Macedonia Greece as occupied territory... promoting good neighbourly relations (or even stability in the balkans)? Seems to me the basis for Poposki's argument is "Since we killed Iraqis for Bush's little war for imaginary WMDs... the US should force Greece to let us join". A bribe to murder people is "human rights" now?

Poposki, Gruevski et al...are full of it (as are their apologists who now dishonestly pretend not to notice their sudden change into descendents of ancient Macedonians). Hatefilled ethnic cleansers of Greeks who "generously" steal the identity of Macedonians and give it the former Yugoslavians/ethnic Bulgarians currently inhabiting ancient Paeonia.

Toleration of others beliefs regardless of the situation is an important part of democracy.
As a Canadian our Country is made up of many cultures that's what defines us as a nation.
The greater region of Macedonia covers a number of different Countries and that the Greek portion of Central Macedonia has not even been part of Greece for a Century . This region changed hand many times and the people adapted their original language in order to survive, human nature.
So if The Repiblic of Macedonia wants to claim a small piece of this what's the problem?
One Country cannot define or dictate what the people of a sovereign nation want to be called.

Where I live in the province of Ontario we have towns named Athens & Odessa and I certainly have not heard Greece complaining of these names their is a City in Ohio named Macedonia .

Greece needs to focus on it's own problems not that of other Countries it's only a name .

Nice try champ. The argument that the dispute is just over a name is just a dishonest straw man used to hide FYROM's expansionist agenda. If it was just about a name as you claim why wouldn't Greece object to Macedonia USA? Athens Georgia?

Its easy for someone uneffected by this to give away someone else's identity but FYROM's blatently obvious state propaganda and encouraging its citizens to see sections of other countries as "occupied" isn't "toleration". Its evil.Sorry. Ethnic cleansing Macedonians and substituting with the former ethnic Bulgarians/Yugoslavians is not a "human right". Shame on you.

Actual you believe a popular urban myth (spread far and wide in the media by FYROM and its antiHellenic apologists). Modern and ancient named regions do not correlate. The original kingdom of Macedonia is located in Greece. The (mostly) former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians are basing their new found "ancient Macedonian" identity... on land and history that belongs to another people and country.

For any that support FYROM, please feel free to give your own identity away to former Yugoslavians/Bulgarians. The identity of Macedonians is not yours to give. Those that support FYROM are effectively colluding in their subtle attempts to ethnically erase Macedonians and substitute them with FYROM nationalists using word games. (much like cold war communists once tried)

Every region in the world has changed hands. I don't imagine Russia would appreciate it if part of China renamed themselves "ethnic Yacutiyans", claimed Peter the Great their national hero, and suggested large tracts of Russia belonged to them.

How do you think Germans would react if Southern Poland renamed themselves "ethnic Prussians", renamed a Polish dialect "the Prussian language" claimed King Otto of the Holy Roman Empire their national hero, and suggested large tracts of German their occcupied homeland?

Funny how FYROM and its patronizing self-righteous apologists seem to now be having problems remembering FYROM's past identity claims. For instance the person who claims to live in Canada conveniently glosses over what FYROM's Ambassador to Canada used assured everyone about their sacred "Macedonian" identity.

'We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian.' - FYROM´s Ambassador to Canada Gyordan Veselinov, Ottawa Citizen Newspaper, February 24 1999

Supporting Nazism is not "human rights"

"One Country cannot define or dictate what the people of a sovereign nation want to be called. "

I'd note The former Yugoslav republic's government seems to have no problem not recognizing either Taiwans desired name ("Republic of China"), its self-determination as a state, AND does not support it joining any international organizations. Why don't you similarly lecture the FYROM government?

"The Macedonian side stated once again that it will not establish official ties of any form or conduct official exchanges with Taiwan, and that it opposes Taiwan's accession to any international organization whose membership requires statehood"

The excuses FYROM (and its apologists) give to justify FYROM's name are riddled with hypocrisy and logical inconsistency. Add to that their selective blindness over FYROM's sudden identity shift into "ancient Macedonians" and "United Macedonia" irredentist language towards Greece... its clear their underlying motivations is ethnic hatred of Greeks (in particular Macedonian who's human rights rights they trample as they "generously" give their identity to another state)

In my opinion the recent upswing in racism in Greece (extremists like Golden Dawn) is in part a response to the smug foreign nationalist bigots that collude with FYROM ultra nationalist extremists.

Sure is easy to give away someone else's identity to conscious propagandists out to ethnically erase someone else. How "proud" you must be of your "morals".

"The creation of the Macedonian nation, for almost half of a century, was done in a condition of single-party dictatorship. In those times, there was no difference between science and ideology, so the “Macedonian” historiography, unopposed by anybody, comfortably performed a selection of the historic material from which the “Macedonian” identity was created. There is nothing atypical here for the process of the creation of any modern nation, except when falsification from the type of substitution of the word “Bulgarian” with the word “Macedonian” were made." (Denko Maleski, former Minister of foreign affairs of FYROM from 1991 to 1993 in an interview to FYROM newspaper Utrinski Vesnik)
