The new legislature of the Serbian parliament will convene on Thursday, May 31, and president-elect Tomislav Nikolic will take the oath of office before the MPs on the same day, officially starting his five-year term.

Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, who is also the acting head of state, has scheduled two sessions for Thursday - the inaugural session and a special session at which the newly elected president will be sworn in.

The agenda for the inaugural session includes verification of MP mandates, election of a speaker and deputy speakers, appointment of a secretary general, members of working bodies and permanent parliamentary delegations to international institutions.

The future parliament will be composed of: 73 MPs from the coalition "Let's Get Serbia Moving," 67 from the coalition "Choice for a Better Life," 44 from the coalition Socialist Party of Serbia-Party of United Pensioners of Serbia-United Serbia, 21 from the Democratic Party of Serbia, 19 from the U-Turn coalition, 16 from the United Regions of Serbia, five from the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, two from Sulejman Ugljanin's Sandzak Party of Democratic Action, and one each from the lists All Together, the Albanian Coalition of Presevo Valley and None of the Above.

The parliament is constituted once two thirds of the representatives' mandates are confirmed.

Until new parliament leaders are elected, the session will be presided by the oldest MP, Zaharije Trnavcevic from the U-Turn coalition, with the help of the youngest representatives on the four lists which got the highest number of seats, and the parliament secretary.

The youngest members of the lists entering the parliament are as follows: for the "Let's Get Serbia Moving” list, Jelena Budimirovic (27), for the “Choice for a Better Life” coalition, Jovana Joksimovic (25), for the Socialist Party of Serbia - Party of United Pensioners of Serbia - United Serbia coalition, Nevena Stojanovic (26), for the Democratic Party of Serbia, Bojana Bozinovic (31).

Parliament speaker candidates need to be nominated by at least 30 members of parliament.

Under the Constitution, one of the duties of the Serbian president is to nominate a prime minister after hearing from representatives of the elected candidate lists.

The Constitution also stipulates that the parliament must approve a government no later than 90 days after it is convened, or it will be dissolved and new elections will take place.

The candidate for prime minister proposes a program and composition of the future cabinet to the parliament.

The government needs to win the support of the parliamentary majority - at least 126 MPs, and its terms starts when it takes the oath of office.

Under the Law on the National Assembly, the constitutive session of the body and the first special session, at which Nikolic is to take his oath, will begin with the new president and MPs entering the parliament building to the sounds of the national anthem and salute by the honor guard of the Serbian Armed Forces.
