Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Barroso agreed in Belgrade on Thursday that the year of 2011 is crucial for the process of Serbia's European integration, and Barroso pointed out that Serbia still has a lot of work to do although the country is on the right track.
Serbia is on the right track but time is going by and the key to solving all problems lies in the country's hands, Barroso told reporters following the meeting with Cvetkovic and added that the criteria has to be met as the EC needs to see the results.
Barroso underscored the importance of conducting reforms in the areas of the judiciary, fight against corruption and organised crime and other reforms.
It is clear that the country's cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is essential, the EC president said.
Cvetkovic said that Barroso backed all the activities Serbia has carried out so far and those which are yet to be conducted.
For our part, we took on the duty to complete our obligations as envisaged in the plans and to solve problems in cooperation with our EU partners, Cvetkovic stated.
Besides the EC president, the EU delegation from Brussels includes EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele and Miroslav Lajcak, the managing director for Russia, Eastern Neighbourhood and Western Balkans in the team of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton.
