Judge Jean-Claude Antonetti, who presides over Vojislav Seselj's trial before The Hague Tribunal, has stated that it is possible that the indicted leader of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) will be granted provisional release soon, the Belgrade daily Politika wrote on Saturday.

Head of the Serbian national council for cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Rasim Ljajic told Politika that, in a letter addressed to the council, Antonetti thanked Serbia for offering guarantees for Seselj and stated that The Tribunal will take this into consideration in case he submits a motion for provisional release.

In his letter, Antonetti mentions two possible options when it comes to Seselj's potential temporary provisional release.

If he asks to be released again, the ICTY will contact us to find out whether we still guarantee that Seselj will return to the detention unit when needed, Ljajic said.

The second option would include a health commission's report on negative influence of further detention on Seselj's health, which could be the basis for his temporary release, Ljajic noted.

He could not say when Seselj could be released, since this depends on the request he has to submit to the ICTY.

Politika also wrote that it is possible that the SRS will put Seselj on its electoral list for the May 6 general elections, given that he has not yet been sentenced.

The ICTY will probably take this possibility into account as well.
