Economic adviser to the prime minister Jurij Bajec said Tuesday that the new rules of conduct for members of the government were one of the most important results of the recent changes within the government, which would allow it to act united and become more efficient.

The new rules are more significant than the replacement of some ministers and reduction of the total number of ministries, since they mean that all differences of opinion must be settled within the government, which will then act as a team, Bajec told Tanjug.

"The prime minister can now secure a higher level of unity within the government, which is very important, since it is about to propose a set of very significant bills aimed at getting Serbia the status of a candidate for EU membership," said Bajec.

It is very good that the prime minister assumed the post of the minister of finance as well, because that gives him control of the financial aspect of government operation, he stressed.

Bajec believes the government will achieve two things by the end of its term: get the EU membership candidate status and make it easier to agree on practical issues regarding everyday life, like how and by what amount to raise the public sector salaries and pensions.

A united government will be more disciplined in that sense, as well as in terms of the national budget and welfare policy, Bajec concluded.
