Van Rompuy: Libyan regime must go without delay

The Libyan government must hand over power without delay, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in a video message, prior to extraordinary European Council meeting scheduled for Friday, dedicated to the events in Libya and the Arabic world.

Van Rompuy said that EU summit is going to make clear to the Libyan authorities that the use of force against citizens has to stop, because those responsible will face severe consequences. He said that European Council will discuss ways of aiding Libyan citizens in the democratic transition, establishing rule of law and strengthening of economy.

In a video-message, published on the European Council website, stated that a humanitarian crisis is being created in Libya and its borders, having in mind that 250,000 people already left that country and that EU can only stand on a side while the people’s safety is being jeopardized.

Van Rompuy went on, saying that what is happening on southern borders of Europe. Irreversible changes have happened in Egypt and Tunisia. European Council will discuss how to offer a positive perspective to the entire region, to help this Arabian spring to become a true new beginning, which is of strategic importance for Europe to.

Libya will not be the only topic discussed on Friday. Van Rompuy announced that he has called for the meeting of presidents and governments of Euro zone member states for Friday, which will be dedicated to the new “Pact for Euro”.
