NATO began 24-hour surveillance of the air space over Libya, where military planes loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi bombarded rebel positions in an effort to defeat an uprising.

An unnamed NATO official told the AP news agency that the first NATO airborne warning and control plane Boeing E-3 Sentry went on patrol at 5:30 GMT on Thursday morning.

According to the official, each of the planes will be flying over the Mediterranean for eight hours before being replaced by another craft.

NATO has 17 E-3s, some of which are currently operating over Afghanistan.

NATO decided Monday to begin the surveillance, while the orders to begin the operation went out on Tuesday.
