Thousands of citizens flocked to the Republic Square in central Belgrade to take part in the event dubbed 'Belgrade for Japan', thus showing their support to the people of Japan who have been struggling with the consequences of the devastating earthquake and tsunami for already a month.

Wearing T-shirts and carrying flags with inscriptions of 'Belgrade for Japan', about 3,500 citizens came to central Belgrade to show solidarity with the country which has made significant investments in the development of the capital of Serbia over the past decade.

For ten years, through various grants, amounting to about EUR 198 million, Japan has been helping improve the quality of life of citizens in the capital and across the country, and Belgrade wanted to show on Sunday that this has not been forgotten, said Assistant Mayor of Belgrade Tatjana Pasic.

Japanese Ambassador to Serbia Toshio Tsunozaki thanked Belgrade and all Serbia's citizens for their sincere support in the difficult moments that Japan is going through.

The government and people of Japan are trying to overcome the crisis that has befallen them, and such messages of support and encouragement will certainly give them the strength to emerge from this difficult period as winners, Tsunozaki underlined.
