Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic stated that Serbia will continue doing its best to reduce the number of bogus asylum seekers to a minimum, and expressed belief that there will be no risk for Serbia's White Schengen during the summer vacations.

Djelic will discuss the issue of bogus asylum seekers with the European Parliament's rapporteur on visa liberalization Tanja Fajon later. In a statement for the Radio and Television of Serbia, Djelic announced that he will convey to Fajon that Serbia will continue doing its best to reduce the number of people from Serbia seeking asylum and illegally residing in the Schengen Area to an absolute minimum.

He underscored that the number of asylum seekers has already been reduced by 40-50 percent in the past several months.

Djelic recalled the EC proposal to launch a mechanism for accelerating the procedure for the suspension of visa liberalization, which envisages reintroduction of visas to a country in case the number of illegal immigrants or bogus asylum seekers from that country increases by 50 percent within six months.

The EC's decision should be considered by the Foreign Affairs Council on June 4, and discussed at the Summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels on June 24, as well as by the European Parliament, Djelic pointed out.
