Serbia's public debt at the end of March stood at EUR 14.62 billion, increasing by EUR 270 million when compared to the month before, the Ministry of Finance stated.At end-February the public debt amounted to around EUR 14.35 billion (around 44.5 percent of GDP).

Serbia's budget system law envisages that the public debt should not exceed 45 percent of GDP.The country's total direct government debt totaled around EUR 12.46 billion at end-March, with internal debt of around EUR 5.32 billion and external debt of EUR 7.14 billion.
Indirect government debt amounted to EUR 2.15 billion, the ministry released on its website.At end-2011, public debt reached EUR 14.47 billion (45.1 percent of GDP).
In late 2010, national debt amounted to EUR 12.16 billion (42.9 percent of GDP).Public debt at end-2009 stood at EUR 9.85 billion (34.8 percent of GDP), whereas at the end of 2008 it totaled EUR 8.78 billion (29.2 percent of GDP).
