Ahead of the extraordinary European Council of Friday 11 March, MEPs and EU High Representative Catherine Ashton will discuss the latest developments in Libya and the EU's reaction to events.

As the uprising edges towards civil war, the UN says over a million people need humanitarian aid. How should the EU respond? Are fresh sanctions or even the sending of troops viable options?

Following Wednesday's debate, Parliament will vote on Thursday on resolutions on the situation in Libya and another on the UN Human Rights Council, from which Libya has been suspended.
