European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday in Sarajevo that the EU is firmly committed to the European future of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), which will stay at the center of the EU's political attention and its enlargement policy.

European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday in Sarajevo that the EU is firmly committed to the European future of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), which will stay at the center of the EU's political attention and its enlargement policy.

Addressing the BiH parliament, Barroso urged political parties to come to an agreement and form the federal government, noting that the future of BiH and its European path is in the hands of its government.

The EC president confirmed that the EU will soon appoint a special EU representative.

He said that progress on the road of European integration requires a joint vision of BiH's future in the EU, as well as willingness to work together.

This means ending the political stalemate which has dominated the last six months since the election, Barroso said.

He stressed that BiH needs institutions which can communicate with the EU with one voice, but noted that this does not endanger the existence of entities.

What this actually means is that, even though many authorities can stay at the level of entities, the coordinating mechanism should be at the state level, Barroso said.

As priorities awaiting the BiH authorities once they are formed, Barroso listed harmonizing the BiH Constitution with the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights, and passing laws on government aid and population census.

Barroso also pointed to the need for establishing rule of law and fighting organized crime and corruption more efficiently, and expressed support to the BiH Court and Prosecutor's Office.
