Albania: CEC restarts counting process, tensions rise

Hundreds of supporters of the Socialist Party (SP) in Fier gathered to protest in “Fitorja” Square, as a sign of support that has been organizing for two days in front of the Central Election Commission (CEC) in Tirana.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) continued the counting process for the votes of May 8 in Tirana; the ones that were placed in the wrong ballot boxes. CEC Vice Chairman Deshira Subashi asked equal respect among colleagues. Meanwhile, SP representative in CEC, Genc Gjoncaj asked the judiciary declaration of the act that was adopted for the counting process of the ballot papers that were placed in the wrong ballot boxes.

Chairman of CEC, Arben Ristani declared that the act has now been adopted. Meanwhile, the meeting of CEC continued with the counting of the contested votes in the 5 other ballot boxes in ZEC no. 4, in municipal unit no. 8 in Tirana.

The protesters headed toward the city’s entrance, by saying slogans in support of the vote. After marching nearly 5 kilometers until they reached the “Mbrostari Bridge”, the protesters burned several tires in the middle of the road, by blocking traffic for two hours. The group of protesters was headed by Socialist Deputy Gramoz Ruci.

Meanwhile, the supporters of the Socialist Party in Durres began their march in the center of the city, and continued toward the Tirane-Durres motorway, where they walked for nearly 5 kilometers.

The traffic was blocked even in this road axis by the protesters, who shouted out slogans in support of the protesters that are gathered in front of CEC in Tirana; they say they are gathered to support the free vote. The protest organized by the citizens of Durres was headed by Socialist Deputy Blendi Klosi.

In Kavaja, the Socialist protesters blocked the road in the “Drazhi Bridge”, in the Rrogozhina-Kavaja national axis. Nearly 300 protesters shouted slogans against the counting process in CEC; as a sign of protest they burned tires, by blocking this road axis.

After gathering in the main square of Vlora, the citizens of this city headed toward its entrance by shouting slogans to protect the vote. The blocked the Fier-Vlora road for nearly one hour. The Socialist deputies Eltar Deda, Fatmir Toci and Arben Isaraj accompanied the protest until its end.

Even in Lezha, the Lezhe-Tirana motorway was blocked by the Socialist protesters for nearly one hour. The protests in different cities in the country were accompanied by the presence of a great number of police forces, whose main purpose was to preserve order.
