The United Regions of Serbia (URS) welcomed Wednesday the Serbian Progressive Party's willingness to work on changes to the Constitution, adding that it should not be done simply to reduce the number of deputies in the parliament, but to regionalize Serbia as well.
The URS decision to collect signatures in favour of constitutional changes was made with the idea to put function above form, says the release.
A radical reduction of the number of ministries and parliament members is justified, but a regionalization process should be conducted simultaneously, transferring authority to the local and regional level, the URS stated.
The Constitution needs to be changed to allow a political and financial decentralization of the country. Districts should disappear, the election system needs an overhaul and mayors should be elected by the people, the URS noted.
The changes should alter the way decisions are made when it comes to the people's everyday life.
