Opposition parties in the Kosovo Parliament will propose Adem Demaçi for president as opposing candidate to Behgjet Pacolli, who is promoted by the new government coalition, headed by Hashim Thaci.
Adem Demaçi is a Kosovo Albanian writer and politician, a longtime political prisoner who spent a total of 28 years in prison for speaking out against the poor treatment of the Albanian minority in Yugoslavia as well as criticizing communism and the regime of Josip Broz Tito. Demaçi was also political representative of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during 1998/1999.
Demaçi will be the candidate of the opposition, comprised of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Alliance for Kosovo Future (AAK) and Self-Determination Movement. These three parties enjoy larger support by Kosovar Albanians than the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the New Kosovo Coalition (AKR), which are set to compose the government, supported by Serb MPs and deputies from other minorities.
The Kosovo President is elected with a two-thirds majority from the 120-seat parliament. If this fails in two rounds, the candidate needs at least 61 votes in the third.
