The opposition, led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), held a rally in Cacak on Saturday, where they again demanded an early general election, threatening to continue with protests across Serbia if denied.
SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic said that if the government does not grant the demand to hold early elections after Serbia gets the status of a candidate for EU membership, the protests would continue, culminating with a rally in Belgrade April 16.
The SNS will not sell any government companies or take out new loans if it wins the election, but will instead raise employment and create a country where everyone will want to invest, he noted.
"I had hoped Serbia would become democratic and a part of the EU by now, but that has not happened," said New Serbia leader Velimir Ilic, adding that "Tadic once promised Serbia would be in the EU by 2013, and now he is speaking of 2018 or 2020."
The government has left 400,000 people out of a job, destroyed the villages and bankrupted 67,000 companies, Ilic claims.
SNS vice presidents Aleksandar Vucic and Jorgovanka Tabakovic, Power of Serbia - BK Movement official Milanka Karic and Socialist Movement representative Aleksandar Vulin also addressed the people at the protest.
Afterwards, the several thousand protesters dispersed. There were no incidents at the rally.
