German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent a very clear message to Belgrade that Germany backs the Western Balkans' EU integration, while in respect of the issue of Kosovo-Metohija the two countries do not see eye to eye, said Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent a very clear message to Belgrade that Germany backs the Western Balkans' EU integration, while in respect of the issue of Kosovo-Metohija the two countries do not see eye to eye, said Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic.

“Germany backs the Western Balkans' EU integration and that is a vital message, given that Germany is one of the most influential EU member states. However, we must understand that at this moment the situation in Europe is far from ideal. The financial crisis creates political problems, and one of them is enlargement fatigue in certain EU member states,” Jeremic said in a live broadcast on TV Prva on Tuesday evening.

Jeremic underscored that German and Serbian still hold divergent views on the Kosovo issue, but the two countries agree that peace and stability in the province should be preserved, and that unilateral moves do not lead to resolution of the problems.

“A solution has to be reached through dialogue. On one side, there is the dialogue which will be continued, but there are also Pristina's unilateral moves on the other. We agreed that problems cannot be resolved by unilateral moves,” Jeremic said.

Serbian Foreign Minister added that the pressure on the countries which have not yet recognized the Kosovo independence is reaching its peak at the moment, and “that even though Pristina does not have the capacity to lobby at the international scene, it has powerful allies who are extremely influential.”

Jeremic said that the UN Security Council session scheduled for Monday will be difficult in diplomatic terms, and that the debate will cover the following questions: Who authorized the use of force in Kosovo in July?, Who was informed about that in the international community?, Why EULEX withdrew from the north of Kosovo?, What should be done next?.
