World media have reported on Sunday that Serbia’s presidential, parliamentarian and local elections have commenced emphasizing the fact that for the first time in the past twenty years, the campaign was dominated by economic issues.

France Presse assessed that the 2012 elections may be considered a turning point as after many years, the main topic is the economic situation instead of conflict in the Balkans.

The problem of Kosovo, which dominated earlier elections, has now been pushed aside by the Serbian economic issues, France Presse informs.

AFP reminds that the elections in Kosovo are facilitated by the OSCE. Associated Press points out that the elections will define the course of economic reforms that the EU expects of Serbia.

BBC commented in a similar fashion. While reminded that in March Serbia was granted an EU member candidate status, Reuters pointed out that the elections are marked by pro-European consensus.

Concluding that 6.7 million voters will choose from 12 presidential candidates, agencies agree that a head of the Serbian state will be elected in the second round of the presidential elections.
