Students from Sofia University staged a protest in downtown Sofia demanding an appropriation of at
least 6 million leva for the winter term of the 2010-2011 academic year so the University would not be shut for being unable to pay its heating bill.
The rally was organized by a group of students styling itself "Initiative against Education Spending Cuts".The protesters demand that the state-run universities get the same subsidy in 2011 as in 2010.
Students went up the stairs of the former Communist Party headquarters carrying a poster "Alma Mater - 1888-2010?". One of the slogans read "We are the future, Djankov and Ignatov are the end", referring to the ministers of finance and of education.
The protesters refused to meet with Ignatov at his Ministry. Instead, they urged him to come to the rally for the sake of openness and clarity. The students listed their demands in a declaration which they submitted to the Education Ministry.
At the rally, Hristo Lafchiev, Deputy Chair of the Kogito Association of Young Scientists, called on all students to join a protest march on Friday.
