A commemorative meeting was held in Sarajevo on Saturday to mark the 17th anniversary of the Markale market shelling, when tens of civilians lost their lives.

According to Bosniak sources from the time, the shell killed 67 people, while over 100 were wounded. The sources state the projectile came from the positions occupied by the Serb forces, while the Serbs and some members of the UN Protection Force located there at the time claim it could not have been fired from the Serb side.

Croatian member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina three-man presidency Zeljko Komsic, representatives of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which is one of the two main political entities that make up the country, and Sarajevo officials laid wreaths at the location of the explosion at noon, the same time when the incident happened.

A commemorative assembly was held at the national theatre earlier.
