President Ivo Josipovic said on Saturday he would request a meeting of the National Security Council if it turned out that accusations made by former deputy prime minister Damir Polancec were true.

President Ivo Josipovic said on Saturday he would request a meeting of the National Security Council if it turned out that accusations made by former deputy prime minister Damir Polancec were true.

"The accusations levelled by the former deputy prime minister, Mr Polancec, are very serious accusations and simply must be fully investigated," Josipovic said, according to the commercial television network Nova TV.

"If they were true, we would certainly be speaking of a serious violation and attack on basic human rights and freedoms, and of a danger to the constitutional order, the political order and the national security system," the President said.

"That's why I will request a meeting of the National Security Council to ensure that the state leadership has all the information and that the entire case is given the necessary attention," he added.

Former deputy prime minister Damir Polancec said on Friday that national chief of police Oliver Grbic had suggested to him that members of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) should write anonymous criminal reports against opposition politicians. Grbic rejected the statement on Saturday, describing it as an attempt to destabilise the police, their chief and the entire Ministry of the Interior.
