The European Commission has confirmed for the third year running the recommendation for start of Macedonia's accession negotiations with the European Union, whereas the name row settlement is crucial for their beginning, Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule said at Wednesday's press conference in Brussels while presenting conclusions from the country's 2011 Progress Report.

"We maintain our recommendation to open accession negotiations. The prospect of European Union accession has been a driver of the reform process. However, there has been little progress over the past year. Core challenges remain, notably: independence of the judiciary, reform of public administration and fighting corruption. Freedom of expression remains a serious concern", said Fule.

He recognized the Macedonian Government on behalf of the Commission over its efforts for enhancement of media freedom and expression.

"With regards to freedom of media, let me appreciate the work of the deputy prime minister in charge of EU integration. We have been encouraged by the first meeting with media representatives and the commitment by the government in Skopje, to turn it into a long-term process, of which the EC is a supportive partner", added Fule.

Earlier, Commissioner Fule presented the report before the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, saying that the continued impasse over the name issue, the motivation for reforms has diminished.

"It is, therefore, crucial that there is progress on the name issue. A solution is long overdue. Opening negotiations will benefit not only the country and the region but the EU as a whole. Another year should not be lost", said Fule while presenting the 2011 Enlargement Package.

Macedonia's Progress Report was also presented later today at the EU Delegation Office by Alexandra Cas Granje, director at the Enlargement Directorate General.
