34 banks operate in Serbia, 21 of them are foreign

The most significant foreign banks according to their participation in overall sector assets are from Italy (21 percent participation), Austria (20 percent), Greece (15 percent) and France (7 percent).

In Serbian banking sector, there are 34 banks in total, 21 of them being in foreign, and 13 in domestic ownership.

In nine of the domestic banks, the state is major stakeholder, while four of them are in private ownership, the internet site Bofos.org.rs published.

At the end of the second trimester of 2010, 30,876 people were employed in those banks.

The most significant foreign banks according to their participation in overall sector assets are from Italy (21 percent participation), Austria (20 percent), Greece (15 percent) and France (7 percent).

The foreign banks are from banking groups from 11 different states.

According to the overall asset criteria, the biggest bank in Serbia is Banca Intesa with RSD 332 billion (RSD 1 = EUR 107) and 14.2 percent of market participation.
