Serbia's State Secretary for Kosovo Oliver Ivanovic said Friday he expected EULEX to overturn the decision by the Kosovo police to ban Serbian registration plates.

The police banned the use of the Serbian plates that denote locations in Kosovo, which have been issued by the Serbian police since the start of 2011.

According to his statement for Tanjug, Ivanovic expects EULEX to overturn the decision or force Kosovo's Interior Minister Bajram Redzepi to withdraw it.

The decision to ban the plates is illegal and cannot be implemented without wanting to cause incidents in the predominantly Serb populated north of Kosovo, Ivanovic argued, adding that it could disrupt the start of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

"On the other hand, there could be problems with implementing the decision, since the Serb population see themselves as Serbian citizens, making it logical for them to accept documents, as well as registration plates, issued by Serbia," he stated.

Kosovo Albanians' one-sided actions are making the situation difficult and raising political pressure, Ivanovic claims.

He expects the EULEX chief to come to Pristina next week and talk the ethnic Albanian authorities into giving up on the ban.
